White Rock Sandcastle Competition 2008

White Rock Sandcastle Competition 2008

Spread the Word and Gather Your 'gangs' and neighbours.

On August 3, 2008 it’s a "BIG FUN, HAPPY DAY" at the beach for everyone ! Keep reading...here is the Program!

how to build a sandcastle in 2 1/2 hours like the pros!

step-one.jpg dig a mound of dirt - approximate time 1 hour, 6 people with shovels, 1 person with bucket to bring water and poor it into a moat which is around the mound. The water is used to keep the mound damp. The best sandcastle sand to work with is wet sand-White Rock has the best in North America!

step-2.jpg have crazy red head create comical diversion. The scales on the back are mounds of sand about the size of your fist, placed side by side. A trowel is used to smooth out the sand into the general shape. If you want to carve a word into the sandcastle, use a kitchen knife to draw the letters in the sand, and then use a kitchen spoon and knife to dig out around the letters. the trick to keeping the letters secure is to have the sand really wet to begin with.

step-3.jpg boo boos are easily fixed by adding wet sand and forming with your hands, it’s still all draft at this point

step-4.jpg a crazy blonde with a spray bottle is dangerous situation! to keep the sand moist, a spray bottle is the most important tool for building a sandcastle. remember, the sand needs to be moist to work with - just like play dough!

step-5.jpg start adding a bit more detail, sea shells for eyes, seaweed for hair, using your fingers, start sculpting a bit more detail. one important thing to remember, at the base of the sandcastle, don’t have sharp vertical lines- as the sand dries, the sand will give away and your sandcastle will fall apart. The sun dries the sand alot faster than you expect.

step-6.jpg more detail for the back legs is formed using your hands-it’s still draft at this point but more detail is added. to get perspective, keep walking around the sandcastle and look at it from all angles, adjust where needed using wet sand or your carving tools.

step-7.jpg crazy blondes and crazy redheads are a necessary part of any sandcastle! Keep buckets of water handy, keep the moat wet, and add more fine details using your hands.

step-8.jpg the final bits of carving the logo are done. tools which came in handy for carving were: the triangles and stuff from a geometry set, a metal kitchen spatula, kitchen knife, kitchen spoons(large and small) a drywall yellow scraper thingy, something to add details like a paint brush for making little holes, a metal noodle strainer-the hand thingy with teeth for scooping noodles, anything which comes to mind.

step-9.jpg toss some seaweed, shells, driftwood whatever you think will make the presentation look neat and let people take pictures!

step-10.jpg a garden rake is a great way to create texture on the sand around the sandcastle for final presentation. Its really easy to smile when you’ve just finished building your very first sandcastle-Tasha Svensson White Rock Sandcastle Assistant Event Manager, and Jorden Abernethy White Rock Sandcastle Logistics Manager posing with their very first sandcastle sculpture built with the Sandsippers, a team entered in this years White Rock Sandcastle Competition happening August 3rd, during the 59th Annual Spirit of the Sea Festival which runs August 1-4. phone mail

Ok… due to the overwhelming volume of voice mails I received on Friday here goes!

Yes…. we can’t wait to meet all your grandchildren, and yes it will be totally cool for you to show your grandchildren what a sandcastle competition is all about. It has been too long!

Natasha and Jorden are local students who have taken on the design and execution of a sandcastle competition as a self determined career exploration.

I am so incredibly proud of them for A) waking up that early in the morning!!!! B) even though it was scary, they went on live TV and C) they learned how to build a sand sculpture. I can gush about them forever because they have the courage to try. They have been involved in all aspects of the event design since March 2008.

The reason they were not on camera direct, was just a matter of timing. Our honoured guests – the Sandsippers team, were able to complete the sandsculpture – with Tasha and Jordens help, in less time than anticipated.

Yes, I am just crazy enough to stand firmly 100% behind high school students, and let them and any of their friends openly explore their ideas to create this event. I firmly believe that everyone has to start somewhere, so why not here?! The spirit of the Sea Festival is about affordable family focused fun, community involvement and learning, so it would seem that they are just as crazy as I am!

Thank you for all the incredibly kind words – yes we are unbelievably excited to have the opportunity to revive the famous White Rock Sandcastle Competition, and update it to the year 2008. How we came to be in this strange position is simply luck and timing that’s all. Someone decided to give us a chance, so we choose playback the same opportunity to others.

No we are not making money off this event, we’re simply doing this for fun, to learn, and for the creative challenge. (see sponsor opportunities on the right hand side banner)

With respect to the shoes before us – there is no possible way we could fill them – they are far too big and that was a different decade! Time has passed, so we are approaching this from a square one approach. It is open to all skill levels and as we proved on camera today – if we can do it … seriously anyone can!

You know, it’s actually relaxing to build a sand sculpture. On the drive home, all three of us were quiet and relaxed after having scaled yet another scary baby step towards a successful revival of the White Rock Sandcastle Competition.

There are many, many other activities going on during the Spirit of the Sea Festival which runs from August 1-4 such as free concerts, a children’s parade, a penny carnival, a waiters race, BBQ’s, fireworks, a Torchlight parade…. and all the seductive dishes only Marine Drive Restaurants can offer with their world famous ocean views. check out the festival line up here!

Team sign up closes July 15, 2008

Team sign up forms, on the right hand side banner.

If you want to help, create a team and enter the competition. The more the merrier!

This is year one of a five year goal….. wanna play sandcastle?

Best regards,

Lisa, Tasha and Jorden and the many other people involved.

Global TV live to air "sandcastle skule"

Check us out Friday June 2o on Global TV from 5:30 AM to 9AM!

One of the teams competing in the White Rock Sandcastle Competition this year, will be our guests of honor, as we all get together and do a live-to-air "sandcastle skule"! (just a little nervous….)

One team -the Sandsippers- competed in the last White Rock Sandcastle Competition 2 decades ago, and have been a huge cheerleader of this attempt to revive the sandcastle competition for the first time in 21 years….so much so, they have contacted all the original team members, and have entered the original team in this revival of the White Rock Sandcastle Competition on August 3rd!

In fact, they have offered a challenge to any team which competed in any of the White Rock Sandcastle Competitions during the 1970s and early 80’s - "wanna play sandcastle?"

Note from Sandcastle event team: we think there may very well be a "cold barley pop" at stake here for any reunion teams!

If there is enough interest in creating a reunion of teams from the 70s and 80s to celebrate the return of the sandcastle competition to the shores of White Rock, it would be our pleasure to create a separate category - the reunion category - in this years competition.

Team sign up forms on the right hand side banner - team sign up closes July 15, 2008

The Sandsippers know from experience, that entering a sandcastle competition is a really fun way to spend the day, meet new people, and that it doesn’t matter what your skill level is - it’s all about having a really fun day at the beach!

We are totally not allowed to talk about this secret, and it’s sooooo cool - ahhhh it’s just killing us!!!!!! But they have a really cool surprise for everyone on August 3rd….oh but we want to tell sooooo badly, yet we promised the Sandsippers we wouldn’t!!!!! ahhhhh but it’s soooo hard not to!!!!!!!

tunes to chill to
